Caffeine / Alcohol / Smoking

Q:   Should I avoid caffeine while I’m pregnant?
A:   You may have caffeine in moderation. Your goal for drinking caffeinated soft drinks should be 12 oz per day, caffeinated coffee - 5 oz per day, and caffeinated tea -12 oz per day. Caffeine can contribute to water and calcium loss so you will be doing yourself and your baby a favor by drinking plenty of water instead of drinking caffeinated beverages.

Q:   Can I drink alcohol while I’m pregnant?
A:   No. You should also avoid alcohol during breastfeeding.

Q:   Can I smoke while I’m pregnant?

A:   No. Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke can increase your risk of preterm delivery, placental abruption and low birth weight babies. Ask your physician about methods to help you quit smoking.
