Meet Our Physicians

Dr. Julie N. Ashmun

I love my job. I love the incredibly personal nature of obstetrics and gynecology in all stages of a woman’s life. I enjoy being able to discuss birth control, sexual health and body awareness issues with teens. I love answering questions and helping patients understand such things as preconception counseling, contraception, infertility and abnormal pap smears.

The appeal for me is grounded in a fundamental respect for women. Both of my grandmothers and my mother had to raise their families as single parents. They had to be smart and they had to be tough. And they were. Growing up watching my mother navigate the family through very difficult times created in me that respect and admiration for women.

Like many medical students, the miracle of birth had a profound impact on me. Obstetrics-Gynecology offers a wide range of bases upon which to serve.  While it is a surgical specialty, it offers many more, and lengthier opportunities for one-on-one interaction with patients than do the bulk of surgical specialties, given its office-setting emphasis

I knew when I was a young boy that I wanted to be a physician. In medicine, there is said to be medical and surgical personalities. Since receiving my M.D. degree from the University of Kentucky School of Medicine I have dedicated myself to the care of women and their families.

Ever since my first delivery as a medical student I knew I wanted to be an
OB/GYN. I loved being a part of women’s reproductive health care, especially pregnancy and childbirth. Many long-term relationships were started during that time and now that the focus of my practice has gone from pregnancy and childbirth to contraception...

I was drawn to a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology during my rotation in medical school. The mixture of practicing preventive care in an office setting along with being able to attend deliveries and perform surgery was very appealing to me. I like to involve patients in their health care decisions by being open-minded to each unique situation whenever discussing treatment options.

I am a husband and a father. Through my own experience, I understand that pregnancy and childbirth is a monumental experience for you and your family and I want to give you what I would expect to be given - the best of care for you and your developing baby; the time and attention, compassion and understanding you deserve; the promise that you’ll never be seen as just another chart in a busy day.
