Ultrasound Q&A

Q: Does ultrasound hurt?

A: No.

Q: What do I need to do in preparation for my ultrasound?

A: For OB ultrasounds, drink at least six ounces of fluid 45 minutes prior to your examination and do not void. For GYN ultrasounds, you do not need to do anything to prepare for your examination.

Q: Are there different types of ultrasound exams?

A: Traditional obstetric ultrasounds are done by placing a transducer (a probe that emits high frequency sound waves) on the abdomen. One variant is a transvaginal ultrasound. This is done with a probe placed in the woman's vagina. Transvaginal scans provide the best view of the female anatomy and give clearer pictures during early pregnancy.

Q: Is ultrasound safe?

A: Ultrasound has been used since the early 1960’s. Current evidence indicates that diagnostic ultrasound is safe for a fetus.

Q: How many people can be present at my ultrasound?

A: Obstetric scans can be a wonderful bonding experience. We encourage you to bring your partner to enjoy this special moment with you. We ask that no more than three people (and no one under the age of five) accompany you to your ultrasound exam.

Q: What is the difference between 2D, 3D and 4D ultrasounds?

A: A 2D ultrasound is the usual way ultrasounds are viewed. A 3D ultrasound allows structures to be viewed with a depth perspective not able to be seen with 2D scans. Fetal Photo uses the 3D technology to see fetal facial features in great detail. A 4D ultrasound allows us to see the 3D image in motion.
