When William C. Ellis, M.D., opened his practice on West Second Street in Lexington in 1953, he had one thing to offer – a unique approach to women’s health care – a compassionate approach available to women of all ages who were in search of an OB/GYN who understood that womanhood is a journey with unique gynecological problems at every stage of life. His promise – to help you through your journey.
Nearly 50 years and 10,000 babies later, Dr. Ellis passed away, leaving a legacy that reads like a Who’s Who of women’s health care - Chairman of the University of Kentucky Developmental Council, a member of the Thoroughbred Club, KMA, and AMA.
Over those years, some of the finest names in women’s health care have left their handprint on the practice. Dr. Preston V. Dilts went on to become the Chairman of OB/GYN at the University of North Dakota in 1973 and subsequently the University of Tennessee and the University of Michigan; Dr. Preston P. Nunnelley became emeritus in 2003 and later became the Chief Medical Officer of Central Baptist Hospital; Dr. James W. Baker joined us in 1988 and became emeritus in 1998.
And the little office on Second Street? It has given way to the suite of offices inside Central Baptist Hospital housing which has become the largest OB/GYN practice in Kentucky and home to some of the very best gynecological and obstetrics professionals offering the very best of care.
Dr. Van R. Jenkins has been with the practice since 1971. Dr. Glenn I. Moore joined in 1975 when the practice became Physician’s for Women. Dr. W. David Hager joined in 1978, Dr. Reva D. Tackett in 1985 and Dr. Bradley B. Youkilis in 1998.
In 1995, Women’s Care Center was born with the merger of four OB/GYN practices, including Physician’s for Women; Drs. J. Mike Guiler, D. Scott Guiler and B. Blake Bradley from Personal Healthcare for Women, PSC; Drs. John D. Looff and William B. Wheeler, who became emeritus in 2006, from Hicks, Wheeler and Looff, PSC; and Dr. Helle M. Bradley from Helle M. Bradley, M.D., PSC.
In 2004, Medical Associates of Lexington joined Women’s Care Center, bringing Drs. Jon H. Voss and Thomas J. Duncan into the practice.
In 2005, Dr. Kimberly W. Bain joined the practice and in 2007, Dr. Julie N. Ashmun completed her residency and became a part of Women’s Care Center.
Since 1953, one characteristic has remained the same; together and individually, Women’s Care Center has encompassed the philosophy that began with Dr. Ellis - a unique approach to women’s health care – a compassionate approach available to women of all ages in search of an OB/GYN who understands the unique gynecological problems women face throughout their life.
Womanhood is a journey. We'll be there, with the best of care.
